What exactly does Xlobbys dial home feature do?

Postby P3rv3rt B3ar on Mon May 29, 2006 11:16 am

I just realised that E.T. is not only one trying to call home, but XLobby does that too. I just hate programs which do that, well i guess most of us does. Things legality is hugely guestionable since i dont remember writing any license agreement allowing spyware run on my machine within Xlobby.

Dont get me wrong, i just love xlobby... but i think Steven should explain us what exactly call home does?

Why would Steven want to collect any other sort of data? For money? He's been very open about his intentions and the fact that Xlobby is for non-profit, and I'm positive (as well as many others) that he is not collecting anything other than what we've allowed him to collect (via donations or 'nowplaying'). If you don't want information sent back to the xlobby server then make sure the "Now Playing" box is not checked under Setup/Misc. This should solve your problem. Even though you have not inputed a log/pass, it will still quary the server if that box is checked.

Have to remember, there is no installer, hence nothing is really being installed on your computer without your consent, so there is no license agreements between parties. Really, Steven doesn't have to disclose anything...you use at your own risk, but like I said, I'm positive he's is not like that.

Hope this was helpful.

All it does it report back whats being played for the signatures in the nowplaying section....like previously posted you can disable this. There is also a ping funtion that checks for xlobby.com to test for an internet connection, just the way it has to be for internet stuff...for some reason its the only sure fire way to see if an internet connection is present.

So no xlobby is NOT running spyware on your machine and I am NOT making any money off you guys except from banner ads and donation. But you should probably download a good antivirus and spyware program that will scan your system for that stuff instead of guessing. I personally use kaspersky.

I think thats pretty clear?

Thank you Steven this was all i was asking. I never question your honesty, but i wanted to hear you personally state what it does, now im with peace of mind with this.

Just for clarification: Im not guessing anything. I can see u r bit upset, with my use of term spyware, but i didnt mean that u included external spyware, but implied that monitoring whats played itself technically fills conditions of term spyware. So i think wording was justified. Secondly obviously software i should use in that case wouldnt be antivirus or spyware program (cause they wouldnt obviously have right rules) but rather network sniffer to analyze what goes trough. However i never saw need to check it out, i thought i rather ask u.

think thats pretty clear?

Yes it is. I was also upset when i asked this at first place... cause some graphics, not really embarrasing in nature, but nevertheles graphics which were made only for my personal use by my girlfriend leaked out as a cover art, cause i was using certain workaround to get most of XLobby.

So now lets make asumption that these innocent graphics would have instead been slides from home made porn video (mayby because some other clever workaround), it would have been rather embarrasing. So if u guys think i was out of line asking, then go a head, but i just think question was fair and also happy for the fact that Steven answer. I have no reason to doubt it, i just wanted to hear it so there will be no more surprises.
