Please help a clueless person with the USBUIRT!

I really have used the search function, but it hasn't helped me so far. I'm running the very latest version of Xlobby supposedly (from Steven's sticky thread in the Announcements forum):

1. First I had a usbuirt.dll2 file in the plugin folder, but nothing showed up in the IR plugin drop-down menu -- so I went to the Download tab and downloaded/installed the plugin, and now I also have a usbuirt.dll file there -- now the plugin appears in the list, but how do I know I'm running the right version, and what's with the .DLL and .DLL2?

2. I can see codes appearing in the IR plugin window when I point a remote at it, but can someone outline the exact steps for learning commands? I've been pressing "set" to turn the box green & capture the code (I guess?), but what the heck do "transmit" & "learn" do? Pressing the learn button pops up a progress bar that never moves (and also appears to stop the USBUIRT from lighting up for some reason), so then I abort. The process doesn't seem intuitive, and I have no idea what I'm doing here.

3. How can I quickly test what I've supposedly learned? I was hoping I could from the same screen in setup transmit the just-learned command, to at least make sure it works, but so far I haven't been able to figure that out.

4. And lastly, can someone please give me a detailed step-by-step of how to assign my (hopefully) learned IR command to an existing button in a skin (or also a new button)? I'm a complete newbie with the event manager/skin editor, and know absolutely nothing.

So far, searching the forum for all this info has not led to me an idiot's guide to capture IR commands and assign them to things...

Thanks so much for your help,
Brent

1. Don't worry about it, usbuirt.dll2 isn't recognized as far as I know
2. Do this:
a)Name your newcommand
b)Click "Set"
c)Click "Learn"
d)Point the remote within 1 inch of the USBUIRT and press the button you want to teach until the progress bar runs to the end.

3. Test the command by pressing "Transmit"
4. Let's say I've just taught Xlobby remote codes for my "TV""
a) open the Event Manager
b) in the Events window create a new Group folder named "TV"
c) create an event for the button (ie "power")
d) go to the "commands" window and click on the "IR" button, then the "command" button
e) scroll through the "alias" list and find the alias name of your remote
f) scroll through the "Command" choices and click on the remote action you want ("power")
g) in the Events window click on the new event you created called "power" (this is an optional step to make sure that the IR command will go to the correct event)
h) back in the Command window side, click the "Add" button

You have now created a new event called "power" which when added to a button in the Skin Editor, will power on your TV when pressed

Let us know if that helps. Good luck!

hjackson,

Thank you -- that was a TREMENDOUS help! Everything worked perfectly as you described...what was throwing me off was that I didn't realize that apparently the USBUIRT must enter some sort of low-sensitivity mode when "learning," so I thought it was dead or locked up, when in fact I just wasn't pointing the remote close enough to it.

Now I have to figure out the basics of the skin editor, which seems rather overwhelming. I did manage to assign my newly-learned IR command to an existing button in the skin, so at least I know it works, despite the fact that I'm totally lost in the skin editor

Rungabic, I'm glad it worked.
BTW, it's not unusual for a skin editor to feel akward at first, but the more you use it, the easier it gets. After a while, you will wonder what the difficulty in using it ever was!
