can media player NOT open if no file is present

i've been trying to get the media player to not open and i am having no luck

i have video's (avi) of TV shows, so i have alot of them, then under each tv show i have seasons.
when i click on a tv show, i want to show the seasons. which works but i have to close the media player on every click of the category.
i understand the media player is forced to open because it is the event of the category, but can we add some kind of code where if there is no file to play, it does not open.

after i click on the tv show, i then close the media player, then all my seasons show in the category. when i click on a specific file, then the media players opens up again and plays the file.
so it's the second click of the category that has the avi file, not the first click.

example
Code: Select all
/csi/csi_season1_episode1/episode1.avi
/csi/csi_season1_episode2/episode2.avi
/csi/csi_season1_episode3/episode3.avi
/family guy/familyguy_season1_episode1/familyguy_season1_episode1.avi
/family guy/familyguy_season1_episode2/familyguy_season1_episode2.avi

ok because i have this structure, in my video category i have 2 cover arts showing.
CSI and FAMILY GUY

if i click on the csi cover art the media player pops up blank because there is no file to play,
then i have to hit back on the media player. <--i want to eliminate this
After media player closes, i have 3 cover arts showing
episode1,episode2,episode3
if i click on one of those cover arts, the media player pops up and the avi file plays.

any ideas?
