Anyone running XL 24x7?

Postby summerall on Fri Mar 10, 2006 1:13 pm

When I setup my XL box I'd like to keep it running 24x7 to keep from having to bootup everytime I want to use it. Is anyone running a XL box 24x7? Do you have any issues with crashing? What is your system configuration?

Thanks

Mine runs weeks on end, with the only reload of xolbby if I need Xant to read the database again. I have a P4 2.4 with 512mb and an Nvidia MX card on XP Pro. I use a modified KISS skin. If you need more details let me know.

I run 24x7 and have been for several months. I use NT Wrapper Lite in order to run xlobby as a service.

I run the Feb 18 2006 build which I would say is as stable as I have seen.

I rarely crash but there have been instances of random crash when the system is stressed (ie: if I FTP large files to the server while xlobby is running). I have not commented on the issue since I dont have any data that I believe will help Steve.

I plan to test the lastest experimental that will provide some debug output.

My experience is quite the opposite... If I leave it running overnight (playing music and shuffling screens - just for test) in the morning I see only empty screen :-) So I switch it off every night... Last night I left it open in main menu not doing anything, and was very surprised to find it running in the morning :-)

Can you explain how NT wrapper works "as a service" and how it helps? I am currently working on my HT server project and want to be able to run 24/7.

I wonder if XL stability is related more to the skin or to the configuration of ones PC. :?:

NT Wrapper - Xlobby as a Service

Postby PhilB on Sat Mar 11, 2006 9:18 pm

It is really pretty straight forward. You can download the "lite" version from http://www.duodata.de for free.

The NT Wrapper allows standard Windows 32 bit applications or scripts to be run as a Windows NT/2K/XP/2003 Service

I was able to get it working for Xlobby after a few minutes of testing the various settings. If you want to get a copy of the .sdi file I created for my instance of XL, I can post that but it really is pretty simple to create your own.

Running 1.0.2119.1889 Net 1.1 Simplicity skin. Don't know the date. Rock-solid. Running at app, not service level. XP SP2, 1.7GB, 256MB.

Only had issues withxAP3 (HomeSeer2 plugin) and that was solved by Bill's suggestion to kill the mi4 conduits to HS2's motion sensors which are not needed. Having said that, XL has never crashed. It just lost xAP connectivity to HS2 until Bill figured it out.

I WAS running it 24x7 until 2.0 alpha version. Now I get a crash every 3 to 4 hours.

So that brings me to another question, maybe I shoudl start a new thred...

What / Where is the LAST version of the 1.x build?

I am aware of the .net 2.0 bugs, and I'm really trying to fix those right now on this thread. Actually I stopped doing my directx stuff to fix these random crash bugs first, so anyone having crashes please contribute to that thread.

I runXL 24x7 (Simplicity skin and .net 1.1 - havent gone to 2 yet!) on XP Pro. The pc is reserved for home automation but runs a number of other apps and holds the music library.

Runs reliably with no issues. Only lockups in XL happen with the weather i/f which is a bit flaky and seems to lock up if the website doesn't respond (there have been other threads on this). So I gave up updating the weather automatically every few hours. Since then its solid. I might reboot every week or two for other reasons.
