RS-232 with a USB Dongle...

Postby sdumas on Tue Jul 29, 2008 6:53 pm

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to pass RS-232 commands via a RS-232 USB dongle fron Aten. Xlobby does not seem to find the com port associated to it. (latest release - not freelobby)

I have no problems passing commands through a real COM1 port. This dongle assigns COM3 to it. I can talk to COM3 via Hyperterminal but not via Xlobby.

Command is as follow:

COM3:9600:none:8:one
!1PWR01\r

(This turns Power On on my Integra DTC9.8 )

This works perfectly with a "real" COM1 port; but via the USB dongle... nothing happens (like I said before it works also with Hyperterminal)

Any ideas?

By the way this is on VIsta 32 Ultimate - drivers are properly installed since I am talking to it via Hyperterminal

Using a recent version of V2 I was able to send communication to a COM3 port using XL, however it was a direct rs-232 port (PCI card) and not a USB.

Strange issue. Sorry I could not be more help to you.

I did not try a previous version. I think anyway that the rs-232 fonctionnality is fairly recent.

Some USB>Serial converters are not fully RS-232 compatible and will only send and not receive. You should check for a full rs-232c handshack.

If you can send the command in Hyperterminal then xLobby should be able to do the same. Are you using send string, not send bytes correct. We have a USB to RS232 adapter and it works fine with xLobby, Calrad part no. 72-UC-320.

I got a new RS232 card to add two new ports on my machines - this worked.

I can now control my Integra DTC9.8, my Barco projector and my X-10 lights! woo hoo!

Thanks for your support anyway!
