KVM Switches?

KVM Switches?

Postby Colby on Sat Jan 21, 2006 9:07 pm

I know this isnt an XL question but... You all are so smart

I am looking for a KVM switch for my 3 cpus. The trouble is I cant find one that will work for my setup.

1st CPU (main workstation)= DVI video out, USB Mouse, PS2 Keyboard
2nd CPU (HTPC) = VGA out, USB Mouse, PS2 Keyboard, USB Touchscreen
3rd CPU (Family) = VGA out, PS2 Mouse, PS2 Keyboard

The problem is I dont really want to run my DVI down to VGA, thats a waste of high dollar graphics card, and lcd monitors. I dont want to use PS2 for my mouse since its a precision laser mouse. I dont care what I do for keyboard.

Thanks to anyone who knows what to do. Or has a better solution.

Colby,

There are no combined VGA/DVI KVMs that I am aware of on the market. It is either VGA or DVI.

I would get VGA-based switch, use dual output to both DVI and VGA and connect DVI directly and connect VGA to KVM.
My $.02, sorry couldn't help further.

As of KVM VGA-based, get Belkin 4-port SE. Wonderful KVM.

Try this:
http://kavoom.biz/

it's a software KVM. Vga, DVI, USB, PS2 ...whatever You can use whatever input devices you want, and they will be maintined. You don't have to owrry about dithering down your displays, and most importantly, it maintains the display resoultion across computers so if your main screen is at 1280x1024 and your xlobby is at 1024x768, it will show the the xlobby as 1024x768 so you can edit away with out having to worry about messing up your skins.

Another option would be to use Microsoft's Remote Dektop protocal locally (if you're running XP Pro) Bonus of this is auto screen resizing (not so good for xlobby editing, but it will make use of all available real estate) as well as a direct connection to Attached devices (if desired), as well as the option of bringing sound locally if you WANT to (This means you can also use one set of speakers if you choose)

I usually use a combination of both, but I do use Kavoom for my xlobby editing so I don't mess up the skins.

Pretty cool, except I wouldn't know how to install this soft into my Sony DVP-C777ES changers. My Belkin KVM they are computers and lets me switch from HTPC to DVD and so for with a keystroke.

This soft seems like modified version of VNC or something like this to me.

Not knowing the reasons for wanting to use a KVM, could you use some sort of remote admin software? Put servers on both the 2nd and 3rd computer, and control everthing from your main workstation. I use Remote Admin to control a winamp/music server and it works great.

Just a thought.

That Kavoom is an interesting product but doesn't really add much above the free VNC versions.

Yep. I use KVM to switch between HTPCs and Sony DVD changers. If I only had HTPCs, VNC or Windows Remote would work just fine.
