how do you remove broken buttons (crash XL)

Postby billberet on Fri Nov 27, 2009 4:45 am

i have a problem

on a page i have a button, every time i go into the editor and click on that button XL crashes to windows. I've tried everything and each time i touch that button XL crashes.
as a fix i made another button and put it on top of the previous one.

it's a fix but not a solution, anyone else ever run into an issue like this.
the only thing i can think of is going into the raw XML file and removing it that way, if that's possible. any suggestions?

Yes, just open the XML file in an editor (notepad, word, or frontpage) and remove the tag.
It will look something like this:

<eventbutton>
<eventid>music:volume down</eventid>
<imagename>btn_main.png</imagename>
<location>1124,184,150,85</location>
<navitem>True</navitem>
<hashcode>8996083</hashcode>
<text>e</text>
<fontresource>Volume-</fontresource>
<font>HTPC,5.66666666666668%,#FFFFFF,bold</font>
<textoffset>4:4</textoffset>
<alignment>middle center</alignment>
<outlinecolor>#000000</outlinecolor>
<backgroundoutlinecolor>#8B201D</backgroundoutlinecolor>
<hidden>False</hidden>
<enabled>True</enabled>
<locked>False</locked>
</eventbutton>

You can identify the button by the eventid, the imagename or the text. Make sure you remove everything from the opening tag <eventbutton> to the closing tag </eventbutton>

thanks buddy
worked like a charm
i didn't want to edit the page just in case XL was doing some sort of checksum on the file.

that's the problem,
it just happened. nothing special, i just happened to edit this one button, and it was crashing XL to the windows screen.

i'm sure it's just a fluke, some save wasn't done correctly, a hickup, but if it happens again, i will post it up on mantis.

thanks

hey wes
it happened 2 more times.
i would edit a button and then i couldn't click on the button anymore in edit mode.
no buttons would highlight. i would have to close XL and restart.
then i could go into edit mode and click on a button to edit. then XL would crash and the button would be corrupted. I lost 3 buttons this way so far.

but only on one page. none of the other pages seem to be affected.

Ok i found the issue, but it's hard to explain
the event editor was open in the background even thou it was closed on the screen
so when i tried to click on a button it would crash XL.

i found the issue by restarting XL
then i hit alt/break, opened up my problem page (broken buttons)
when the page loaded, the event editor was already open, so i closed it.
then no more crashing from XL when i try to edit a button.

BUT

when i started XL, then navigated to my problem page and hit alt/break
there was no event editor opened. so when i tried to click on a button, everything crashed.
it's a bit hard to explain but the issue was the event editor still linked to a button
even thou it was not open.

the issue happens when i click properties of a button, then go into the event editor
close the event editor, then i get a fatal crash. when i restart XL, from the start menu, i go into edit mode, then open up the problem page, and the event editor is opened. i have to close the event editor, then save.

i made it happen half a dozen times already on one page, i have not tried it on others yet.

Bill I have a similar situation on 2 machines (I may have spread the problem by copying a screen over).
I my case, going into edit mode and just clicking on any event button on the screen causes a crash.
Like you, I can create a new button and event and move it over an old one.

exactly my issue
i don't know if the events are corrupted, or the button is.
i seem to loose the ability to click on anything, once the issue occurs i have to reboot.
seems to be happening more and more.

Bill, I installed the latest V3 build on both machines that had this issue and now I cannot get XL to crash when I fiddle with event buttons.
BTW, they are all IR-controls.

Give it a shot.

hey jay,
good to know, i did the new install and i think my issue is resolved.
i did some quick testing, properties, ir buttons, close editor, open editor, switch screens, etc

the issue did not reoccur.
:)

thanks for the update!!!!

That's great!
Odd that only we seemed to be affected.
By any chance did you download the previous update thru a wireless connection?
I've had problems with that from time to time.

hey
no i've always downloaded my updates directly from the server, with a wired connection.
i think it had to do with IR events cause those are the only buttons that were effected.
i will do some more testing to make sure all is well

OK and as you probably noticed, my bad screens were IR controls too.

Your crash issues were a bug that we finally found and fixed. In the future use xLobbys new builtin update system, under the setup menu select the update tab. You can install standard xLobby releases and plug-in releases. You can also install beta bleeding edge xLobby updates that can sometimes solve issues between major xLobby releases. Pressing the (Check For Updates) button will check to see If your system needs upated, if so then xLobby will list the updates, (user selectable) otherwise it will indicate that your system is up to date.
