What resolution do you use for your HTPC?

Postby Naylia on Wed Jun 08, 2005 11:18 pm

Hey guys,

I'm working on my skin a little and though in general it would be good to know what the most common resolutions are for people to be using. So go ahead and vote!

If I missed something let me know... oh and please don't post overscan/underscan rezzes. If you're at 1276x719 please choose 1280x720. Thanks!

Oh and Steven, lift the limit on number of poll options if you can. I had to delete like 10 resolutions from my list.. :(

I voted 1280x720 because that is what I will probably settle on for my PJ... Though I am currently using 1440x960 (2xDVD). In my LR I use 800x600 for my 25" SDTV, but I have recently aquired a 800x480 7" touch screen that I want to get working as well.

Who's using 800x600? and why? If you're using a SD TV you should give 720x480 a shot, this avoids down rezzing so you keep detail as well as you can over svideo. Plus any other apps that need a higher resolution should auto adjust ok. (video games and such) Just curious.

I voted for 1080i but I also run 720p...depends on what res my HD is coming in on. I usually run 720p when watching movies...

800*600 cause of 1 to 1 pixel ratio to the projector

720x480 wont really work in a PAL country....

I use 1280*720 for the pj and 800*600 for the multiroom install with a touchscreen but mainly use PPC.

I would not think it matters whether you are PAL NTSC or whatever. You should always go for 1:1 pixel mapping of your display and let the HTPC scale - correct ?

On a standard definition TV you'll want to use a resolution that matches your tv. 720x480 in the NTSC regions or 720x576 in PAL regions. If you use a higher resolution and down scale you can lose a lot of detail. That's why I inquired about 800x600. It makes sense to use on a projector that has it for native res, but if you are using a SDTV and using 800x600 you lose a lot of detail when your video card dumps it to your svideo out.

So yes, always go for 1 to 1 pixel mapping on the display. It's just different for different displays and it's tough to build a skin that scales flawlessly to any resolution.

I've got an SDTV with an SVGA input that supports natively 800x600
resolution. The TV was billed as being HDTV-ready, years ago
when we got (won) it. Kinda funny, really...
